According to wingnut Alaska Senate candidate Joe Miller, potential Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is open to a shut down of the federal government.

In a fascinating interview with the National Review, Alaska Senate candidate Joe Miller said that in a private conversation with Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader expressed openness to the idea of a government shutdown

"There was a comment made at breakfast this morning about shutting down the government, and he reacted in a positive way," Miller told the Review's Robert Costa. "I'm not going to quote him, but I think that he recognizes that that's on the table."

A spokesman for McConnell's office said he could not attest to the anecdote's veracity as he was not in the private meeting.

"I don't know what reacting in a positive way means or what the comment was," said the spokesman. "So it's tough for me to hypothesize on it."

Miller has pushed the idea of shutting down the government as a means of forcing the president's hand on a host of legislative matters. The primary battle will likely occur over repealing health care reform. Should a Republican-led Congress pass a budget that defunds the law, the president would either have to sign or veto the measure. Sans budget, the government could come to a halt, much like it did under the Newt Gingrich-led House during the Clinton administration.

Meanwhile Alaskan crackpot Joe Miller comes out against the minimum wage. Really.

"That is clearly up to the states," Miller said. "The state of Alaska has a minimum wage which is higher than the federal level because our state leaders have made that determination. The minimum level again should be the state's decision."

So there should not be a federal minimum wage?

"There should not be," Miller answered.

How the hell can someone in this day and age argue that there should not be a minimum wage? As Cesca notes, this is like coming out against child labor laws.

This is, of course, the same Miller who also believes that federal unemployment benefits, Medicare, and Social Security should all be eliminated.

The GOP has gone full on nuts, nominating some real doozys (doozies? - whatever). In New York, you've got Chuck Paladino who sends out emails like this, "all in good fun".

In Delaware, they nominated anti-masturbation, pro-lying/crazy quotes, no intelligence Christine O'Donnell over Mike Castle. Castle, by the way, was up 10 points in head-to-head polling versus Chris Coons. O'Donnell is down 16, with Karl Rove - KARL FREAKING ROVE - calling her "nutty" and admitting she's unelectable.

The GOP/Tea Party feud has begun.

So where does The Amazing Race fit in? Well, the GOP electoral "strategy" (used loosely) of nominating fringe, far-right whackjobs might just cost them the gains they'd been hoping for. In other words, it will have same effect as the watermelons fired from this slingshot. Start at :20 for the good stuff. Show that knight who's boss.

Gingrich goes full-on birther

Jonathan Chait at the New Republic dives into Newt Gingrich's headfirst dive into birtherism this weekend:

Citing a recent Forbes article by Dinesh D’Souza, former House speaker Newt Gingrich tells National Review Online that President Obama may follow a “Kenyan, anti-colonial” worldview.
Gingrich says that D’Souza has made a “stunning insight” into Obama’s behavior — the “most profound insight I have read in the last six years about Barack Obama.”

“What if [Obama] is so outside our comprehension, that only if you understand Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior, can you begin to piece together [his actions]?” Gingrich asks. “That is the most accurate, predictive model for his behavior.”

As Newt finds himself being outflanked on his right by the Beck/Palin connection, he's found himself increasingly playing to the wingnuts because that's the path to the nomination.

But D'Souza is an equivocating nut, and I don't care if he recently became a college president. I wrote a piece about an evening spent with him. He's an arrogant apologist for the right who can operate only in the realm of his theoretical. His theories don't adapt well to the real world. Hell, his nickname is Distort D'Newsza. But both are smart, educated men embracing whackjob paranoid ideas. As Chait alarmingly notes:

"Gingrich was once the most powerful Republican in America and remains an influential figure within the party. D'Souza has done stints at the most prestigous conservative think-tanks. The line between man and kook is getting harder and harder to discern."

Or, as Bob Cesca notes: Everybody knows you never go full Birther.

Wingnut Rick "gather your armies" Barber gets steamrolled in AL runoff

MONTGOMERY, Alabama AP — A mainstream Republican rolled past a conservative tea party activist in the primary runoff for a southeast Alabama congressional seat that Republicans hope to reclaim.
Montgomery City Councilwoman Martha Roby was drawing 60 percent in the unofficial count in the 2nd Congressional District Republican runoff Tuesday against Rick Barber, a former Marine who operates a Montgomery pool hall that hosts tea party meetings.

I feel a little better about Alabama today. Between Barber and Ag Commissioner reject Dale Peterson, there is hope.

Teabaggers literally do not understand American Revolutionary History

From Bob Cesca's awesome site comes this video of a teabagging wingnut named Rick Barber running for Congress from Alabama's 2nd district.



Barber illustrates a point I've been trying to make: teabaggers and wingnuts either do not or choose not to understand U.S. history, especially the history of the American Revolutionary Government. The premise is that he's sitting down with a group of Founding Fathers and explaining to them how bad things are today. Rick's problem is that he makes excellent hyperbole, but he's almost universally wrong on his facts. He wouldn't pass my 9th grade American History class.

Let's dissect his issues:
He starts off with "and I would impeach him"
Clearly meaning President Obama, my question to Barber and the baggers is: "on what grounds?" The bogus nonsense about him being Kenyan? Because you don't like what he's done? Because he's black? My guess is that the last one is closest to the truth.

Barber complains about an income tax, that we have to report what we earn to the government
While it's true that there was no income tax or IRS in Washington's day, it is a bald-faced lie that Washington opposed taxes. Washington almost universally supported the ideas of Alexander Hamilton. The leading Federalist of his day, Hamilton believed in a government big enough to enforce the rules that he felt needed to be placed for the common good. This included a national bank (to build good credit with foreign nations - a rousing success) and an excise tax on whiskey in 1791.

We were in major debt, mostly to France, from the Revolution. In order to pay off our debts, Hamilton proposed, and Washington backed, a tax on whiskey. This tax was anathema to farmers in western Pennsylvania, many of whom had never heard about the Revolution and didn't give a whit who was in charge. These farmers rioted, severely injuring several tax collectors and creating general mayhem. Washington, realizing that the states rights government under the Articles of Confederation fell because Shay's Rebellion had created the (real) perception that the government couldn't keep the peace, knew he had to act decisively. And so Washington put his uniform back on, and with his former aide-de-camp Hamilton, led the U.S. military into western PA to force the farmers to pay the tax and acknowledge the supremacy of the federal government at the barrel of a gun.

So much for an anti-tax, states rights Washington.

He decries an "All powerful separate court system"
Wrong, wrong, wrong. One, the court system is not all-powerful. Checks and balances my friend. They exist. Show me where the courts have run roughshod on your rights over the will of the legislative and executive branches.

Two, yeah, it IS a separate court system, as directed by the same Founding Fathers Barber is hallucinating about meeting. Three branches, as proposed and approved by a very states rights-leaning James Madison.

Complains that the IRS can perform it's duties "without representation"
Really? The IRS was created in it's quasi-current form by the 16th Amendment after it's initial inception by Republican Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. The 16th Amendment was lawfully proposed by progressive Republican Theodore Roosevelt and approved by a lawfully-elected (yes, elected!) Congress via the mechanics of the Constitution.

Furthermore, Congress has the power to eliminate the IRS anytime it sees fit. That it hasn't doesn't make the IRS illegal.

Barber can dislike the IRS (I do, though for different reasons, I'm sure), but he can't claim usurpation of power. Congress created it and Congress makes the rules for it. It didn't generate itself out of a little ball of evil sent to earth by aliens via asteroid.

We are entitled to our own opinions, but not our own facts.

"IRS is going to force us to buy health insurance"
No, they're not. A lawfully passed piece of legislation may force you to buy health insurance (the same way you're forced to buy auto insurance), and the IRS may be directed to enforce that edict via that same lawful legislation. But a direction to enforce is much different than "the IRS forcing us", which sounds like more implied usurpation.

Wrong again. Not liking it isn't the same as illegal.

Health care + government = "cram it down our throats"
What IS it with teabaggers and cramming stuff down their throats? Come up with a different euphemism. Of course, they named themselves teabaggers, so wha'da'ya want?

"You gentlemen (referring to the mystically-gathered Fathers) revolted over a tea tax. A TEA TAX!"
Oversimplified bullshit. They revolted over a litany of minor taxes because those taxes were placed by a government over which they had no say. It wasn't the taxes, it was that they had no say in those taxes. There is a HUGE difference here: as English citizens, they were used to paying taxes. The growing problem was a lack of say in the government that placed those taxes.

Further, it was frustruation that those taxes were going to pay for England's wars in Europe that were accomplishing nothing good here. These wars were sucking us in to conflicts (The French and Indian War) that had nothing to do with this continent. They were wrecking our economy and we didn't think we should be obligated to fund them.

But it was also about many events besides taxes. It was the feeling that, after almost 170 years here we had earned the right to self-determination (as Thomas Paine said "It was absurd for an island to rule a continent"). It was about alienation from Britain and a feeling that we were really no longer English. Any ties we had were residual.

It was about mercantilism, that England was using us as a cash-generating ATM. They told us who we could buy from and who we could sell to and at what prices. Mercantilism and the Navigation Acts, over which we had no electoral say, caused a lot of law-abiding families to have to resort to criminal smuggling.

And it was a bit about hooliganism. Sam Adams and the Sons of Liberty were intimidating bullies. Not that they didn't have a valid point, but they were roughnecks looking for an excuse to pick a fight. The Tea Act (and more importantly, the Stamp Act) and the lack of representation in Parliament were those excuses. The Boston Massacre and the propaganda created by Paul Revere, silversmith and member of the Sons, was the spark that blew the powderkeg.

Argue the merits of the Revolution all day, but there is no tax or law on the books in America that has not been lawfully passed by your representatives in Congress and signed by the President as proscribed by the Constitution.

Rick Barber and his wingnut friends might not like the laws - hell, there are lots of them I don't like. But that doesn't mean I get to cry "unfair! illegal!". Barber has representation in Congress that he is allowed to petition for redress of any perceived grievances. He is, obviously, allowed to run for Congress to bring his idiotic views to light.

This situation of "I don't like the laws, so they must be illegal" is so different from the complaints of the Sons of Liberty. The American colonists literally had no representation in Parliament (not representation that they disagreed with like the teabaggers, they literally had no representation). This claim would be laughable if there weren't so many uneducated schmucks buying into the Palin/Fox/Beck line of horseshit.

"Gather your armies"
Barber might want to educate himself on the term "sedition". It means to encourage the overthrow of one's own government. This phrase, "gather your armies", like so much of the wingnuttia lexicon, treads ever so close to that seditious line.

An Alabama commercial is being run accusing Bradley Byrne of some pretty horrible stuff. How do we know it's horrible? The dubious and questioning redneck voice over let's us know, goldangit.

GOP senators in favor of allowing no-fly listers to buy guns; NRA member only believes what Fox News tells him

Two GOP senators are more concerned with gun rights than terrorism, to the point where they oppose preventing people on the government's terror-watch no-fly list from buying guns.

New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's appeal to what he called "common sense" at a congressional hearing Wednesday morning failed to sway two Republican senators who said that giving the government the ability to block the purchase of guns by suspected terrorists would undermine the Second Amendment's right to bear arms.

"Shouldn't FBI agents have the authority to block sales of guns and explosives to those on the terror watchlists -- and deemed too dangerous to fly? I actually believe that they should," Bloomberg told senators.

"This common-sense legislation is not anti-gun -- it's anti-terrorist," chimed in Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), the sponsor of a bill that would close what Bloomberg has called a "terror gap."

But GOP Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lindsay Graham of South Carolina wouldn't go along.

Admitting that "at first blush" the bill "seems to be an obvious step that we should take," Collins said that many people on the FBI's watchlist don't belong there. "None of us wants a terrorist to be able to purchase a gun, but neither should we want to infringe upon a Constitutional right of law-abiding Americans," she said.

Graham described the bill as an instrument of those who would ban guns altogether. "We're talking about a constitutional right here," he said, explaining that he could not support a bill that would force "innocent Americans" to "pay the cost of going to court to get their gun rights back."

Graham wasn't nearly as concerned about rights when he launched into a disquisition on the treatment of American citizens accused of terrorism. "I am all into national security," he said. "I want them to stop reading these guys Miranda rights."

That's some good thinkin' there, hoss. Fortunately, as Think Progress reports, the average NRA gun owner doesn't agree.

Notably, one NRA member found news of the “terror gap” so incredulous that he did not believe the fact that potential terrorists are allowed to purchase firearms. He called news of the GAO report “false information,” and when ThinkProgress tried to show him a Washington Post article reporting it, he remained unconvinced:

NRA MEMBER: The Washington Post, I think that’s part of like the Communist News Broadcasting and everything. … The Washington Post lies on everything. … I don’t know how I can believe the Post. You need to find better facts than the Washington Post. … I wouldn’t believe a word I read in the Washington Post. It’s one of the worst papers in the whole country, from what I’ve heard.

TP: Oh, then which newspaper would you believe?

NRA MEMBER: Which newspaper? I don’t know I would stick to Fox News over everything.

Anti-government gun-toting wingnuts to rally against government in national park

A group called Restore the Constitution will be holding an open-carry rally in sight of the Capitol. Protesting what they call "President Obama's insistence on and the Democratic Congress's capitulation to a "totalitarian socialism" that tramples individual rights", they'll be there will the full cooperation of the U.S. Park Police, through which they applied for a permit.

When they stand on the river banks Monday and preach an activism that sounds to some like sedition, the armed demonstrators will have the full support of the federal government they fear, carefully detailed in the 26-page event permit , complete with the existing gun regulations of both Virginia and the Department of the Interior and a commitment to provide snow fencing, barricades and bike racks for the event.

"We handle tens of thousands of demonstrations of a First Amendment nature annually," said Dave Schlosser, spokesmen for the U.S. Park Police, "and we are handling this event no differently than any of the others. We assess what their needs are to allow us to facilitate a safe and successful demonstration, so they can exercise their rights to free speech and free assembly without interference."

Right.

Because the revolutionaries at Lexington and Concord first applied for permits - while presenting valid ID - to use Lexington Green on April 19th from 2 until 7 am. And they also asked the British troops to kindly set up fencing and bike racks. And porta-potties.

Tax Day Tea Party lies: 95% of America got a tax cut, but only 12% know it

Ahead of the wingnuttia surely sprouting today like spring weeds, here is a compilation of the TRUTH about taxes in 2010 under the Obama Administration:

"The only tax I think that has been put in place so far is an increase in the federal cigarette tax. I can't think of another Obama tax that has gone in place so far," said Chris Edwards, Director of Tax Policy Studies at the conservative Cato Institute. "I would say that people are angry because big taxes are coming down the road because of the gigantic deficit built up under Bush and continued under Obama."

The non-partisan Center for Budget and Policy Priorities reported on Wednesday that "Middle-income Americans are now paying federal taxes at or near historically low levels." How low? The average family of four right now is paying 4.6 percent of its income in federal income taxes -- the second lowest percentage in 50 years.

A report from the White House Council of Economic Advisers, meanwhile, asserts that the president's economic stimulus package has sent more than $200 billion in tax relief and other benefits to mainly middle- and lower-income families since its passage.

Citizens for Tax Justice, a self-described non-partisan organization, released a report on Tuesday that read: "The 2009 economic stimulus bill actually reduced federal income taxes for tax year 2009 for 98 percent of all working families and individuals." This total includes the 95 percent of working families that will or have received tax credits in the range of $400 to $800.

The health care bill passed by the administration, meanwhile, includes a tax credit that could cover up to 35 percent of the premiums a small business pays to insure its workers. The Recovery Act, meanwhile, included such tax breaks as a $1,500 credit for home energy improvements, and an $8,000 credit for first-time home buyers.

Yet polling numbers indicate that Americans are barely aware of these developments. Indeed, a good chunk of the country believes it has been saddled by this administration with tax hikes. Back in mid-February, a full 24 percent of respondents to a CBS News/New York Times poll said that their taxes had increased under Obama. Fifty-three percent said they had stayed the same. Only 12 percent thought their taxes had gone down.

"Belief is triumphing over reality," explained Bob McIntyre, director of Citizens for Tax Justice. "Part of it is they watch the wrong television shows and believe it.

"Obama passed 25 separate tax cuts," Sheryl Stein, founding member of "The Other 95%" said in a statement announcing the group's plans, "including $300 billion in middle class tax cuts -- one of the largest in history - as part of the stimulus package. Unlike President Bush's 2001 tax cuts, which went to the wealthiest 2.2%, President Obama's tax cuts overwhelmingly benefit working and middle class families -- in fact, 95% of all Americans."

And there is some indication that Americans are satisfied, generally speaking, with the current trade-off between their tax burden and the benefits that government provides. "Just ahead of Tax Day, a new New York Times/CBS News poll finds that most Americans regard the income taxes that they will have to pay this year as fair, regardless of political partisanship, ideology or income level," the Times reported.

Perhaps even more surprising, though, is that even among the 18 percent of Americans who say they support the Tea Party movement, more than half call their own income tax fair. Sentiment turns more sour, however, among the smaller group of Tea Party supporters who are active in the movement. Most of them, 55 percent, regard the income tax they have to pay as unfair. Thousands of Tea Party supporters gathered in Boston today for a rally near the original site of the Boston Tea Party.

Of course, they're not gonna let a little thing like the truth stop them. Oh no - the truth is fe those academic thinkin' types

Wingnuts love to make a big deal and get all in a kerfluffle about the President's courtesy in bowing to foreign leaders. "WEAKNESS!" they scream. "TRAITOR!" they cry. "Damn uppity black usurper" they think.

Here's the thing - if you're the President of the strongest nation on the planet, you don't NEED to walk around with a swagger. That's what got us into trouble in the first place, what with that Cowboy Diplomacy.

They're afraid of intellectuals, because we're smarter than they are. They're the same crowd that thinks that they have to carry an assault weapon to be tough. In reality, they're the one's scared of their own shadows.

Let's be straight. Obama kills terrorists. He's not afraid to allow the assassination of american citizens who are actively involved in terrorist plots. He's getting fissile material out of dangerous hands, just this week.

These cowards on the right are afraid of actions, and they won't look at the man's deeds.

Then there's the interview "Good Morning America" anchor George Stephanopoulos conducted with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev the day after Medvedev and President Barack Obama signed the new START treaty.

MEDVEDEV: He's very comfortable partner, it's very interesting to be with him. The most important thing that distinguishes him from many other people – I won't name anyone by name – he's a thinker, he thinks when he speaks. Which is already pretty good.

MEDVEDEV: Obviously I do have someone on my mind. I don't want to offend anyone. He's eager to listen to his partner, which is a pretty good quality for a politician. Because any politician is to a certain degree a mentor. They preach something. And the ability to listen to their partner is very important for the politician. And he is pretty deeply emerged in the subject, so he has a good knowledge of what he's talking about. There was no instance in our meetings with Mr. Obama where he wasn't well prepared for the questions. This is very good. And after all, he's simply a very pleasant man with whom it's a pleasure to deal with.

The racists-posing-as-Patriots over at Confederate Yankee have gone farther over the deep end. Now they're jumping on board with David Vitter ("I'll take a TV personality over a community organizer every day") and Sarah Palin in endorsing Palin's "nuclear experience" as the governor of Alaska over Obama's experience in crafting legislation limiting loose nukes.

He simply doesn't know when to shut up.

Palin's view of nuclear weapons was shaped by her stint as the commander in chief of the Alaskan National Guard, our first line of defense against Soviet nuclear weapons. Obama has held his same views since he was a stoner college student and has showed no signs of maturing.

Which of the two would you trust?

Update: I stand corrected. Palin does not have any experience with the AANG. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion AANG, Fort Greely is (literally) the first line of defense against Soviet nukes with 25-30 anti-ICBMs, but they do not report to the governor.

Obama? Still utterly untrustworthy, and getting more so every day.

So first Bob Owens (CY) says that Palin has more nuclear experience because of the Air Alaska National Guard. That in itself is hilarious.

Let's look at the reality versus the truth that's being spun regarding this president and his "failures".

When the President was elected and this congress took office, we were losing over half a million jobs a month. Now, we are gaining jobs.

In the past year and a half, they’ve stabilized the banks, the economy, and the major car companies, they passed health care reform that adds thirty million people and cuts the deficit long term while getting rid of the worst abuses of the insurance companies, extended the solvency of Medicare for a decade, we’re drawing down troops in Iraq, we are making progress with green energy, there has not been one successful terrorist attack on American soil, we’ve just signed a nuclear arms reduction treaty and re-examined our use of nuclear weapons and we are making great progress on the global stage. Hell, the DOW is up over 3,000 since we got rid of the bums. Personally, we’re getting a road paved near me that was a disaster, and it is being paid for with stimulus money. We’re gonna put some people to work and have a nice paved road! And Obama and company did it all without getting blowjobs from interns.

And we’re going to reward them by kicking a lot of them out of office. We’re a really stupid country.

Ford's turning a profit, the president made $8 billion for the nation in the Citi bailout, jobs are up, if START II passes the threat of nuclear holocaust is pushed back, the troops in Iraq are coming home without it turning into a bloodbath, we've avoided terroist attacks on our homeland (unlike Bush), we've captured or killed 10 top terrorists in just over a year.

Yeah, throw the bums out.

If we do, this is what we get: a reversal of all of the gains we made. And a return to the world created by this guy. Don't believe me? Here's the guy who shut down government and drove us to our knees 15 years ago in the name of dogmatic conservative "principle":

Gingrich ribbed the media for suggesting that this wasn't possible. "I think they forget that once upon a time I used to be Speaker of the House," he said. "Under our Constitution, Congress doesn't have to pass the funding."

What's funny is that Republicans claim to be for tax cuts. They're not - they're for them as political leverage when they deliver them. When President Obama cut taxes by 10% for 95% of all Americans, that's bad.

Bad.

So bad that Glenn Beck wants you to give it back.

"So far, Americans who have filed their taxes have discovered that the average refund is up nearly ten percent this year -- to an all-time high of about $3,000. This is due in large part to the Recovery Act. In fact, one-third of the Recovery Act was made up of tax cuts -- tax cuts that have already provided more than $160 billion in relief for families and businesses, and nearly $100 billion of that directly into the pockets of working Americans.

The reality is that this President is standing up for the economic needs of the core demographic of Tea Partiers. Except, you know, he's black.
