John Boehner and anti-intellectualism: ‘I Don’t Need To See Numbers Or Listen To Economists’
In an interview with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday, John Boehner (R-Dipshit) argued against further stimulus and in favor of extending the Bush Tax Cuts For The Wealthy.
When Wallace showed Boehner GDP numbers indicating that the economic recovery is shrinking and stated that many economists were calling for more federal stimulus (the effects of which Boehner still waffles about), Boehner became blustery. When pressed by Wallace about the contradiction between the giant hole that an extension of the Bush Tax Cuts For The Wealthy would blow in the deficit and Boehner's self-described deficit hawk status, Boehner decided that facts are inconvenient things:
He then went on to add: "Yes, those pesky NUMBERS. Those are LIBERAL NUMBERS, bent on making us a socialist nation. As Republicans, we don't trust those Democrat numbers. Numbers lie. We go from the gut, we listen to the American people. Maybe in Washington they care about numbers, but in real America, we know that numbers lie. Stop being so naive, Chris."

Now he's going to try to hang the lack of jobs that his party has filibustered on Obama. and they're going to hang the economy, which is losing momentum for lack of further stimulus, on Obama despite the fact that it's the GOP who won't listen to numbers and facts and do the right thing. Cesca (h/t) points out: The Republicans have filibustered the jobs. And they've proposed solutions, like renewing the Bush tax cuts and cutting spending, that will sabotage economic growth.

Bush "tax cuts" will represent a HIKE in taxes for those making under $300K in 2011

From the pages of the Wall Street Journal - read that again... the Rupert Murdoch-owned WALL STREET JOURNAL - comes this graphic showing taxes in 2011 if the Bush "tax cuts" were still in place, versus a 2011 under the Obama plan, with the tax cuts for the wealthy being allowed to expire while middle-class tax cuts (for those making under $250,000) are extended.
Read very carefully. The Bush "tax cuts" are only a tax cut if you make over $300,000. For anyone under that line, these "tax cuts" are actually a tax increase.
As the GOP - and it's house organ Fox News and it's lunatic fringe the Tea Party - attempt to flog the Bush "tax cuts" as a tax cut for anyone other than the wealthy, remember this graphic. As Fox trots out commercials for their Sunday programming that suggest that everyone is talking about the Bush "tax cuts" as a way to stimulate the economy, remember this graphic.
Also remember that when it comes to direct injections into the economy in the form of unemployment benefits that are immediately spent, they oppose it. When they scream about fiscally responsible policy that must be paid for before it goes into effect, they don't mean the Bush "tax cuts" for the wealthy. They're perfectly OK with that.
When they yell about deficits, they don't take into account the effect that the Bush "tax cuts" will have (see graphic at right) at ballooning the deficit.
This is a microcosm of how Fox and the Tea Party and the GOP work hand-in-hand-in-hand. Fox has spent a decade setting up strawmen to strike fear into the hearts of Great Americans everywhere, so that like Pavlov's dogs, they react whenever Fox tells them to. Then Fox trots out a meme, such as "the Bush Tax Cuts will spur the economy that the Kenyan Messiah has wrecked". And respond they do. Never mind that the economy went under during Bush 43. Never mind that whatever gains we've had have come as a result of Obama and the stimulus. If Fox says Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest are good, the fearful will respond.
How do I know this? It's obvious. Look at Fox's viewership in terms of the commercials they run. Gold. Diabetes supplies. Senior insurance. HoverRounds (go, go, go). Home security. Their viewers are, by-and-large, older white people. Older white people who are scared, of death, illness and Kenyans wrecking the economy, seeking reparations and Islamicizing their grandkids. They're so scared that they'll vote against their own economic self-interest because Fox News tells them that the Black Kid is bad.
Look at the chart again... the majority of Fox's viewers are not making over $300,000 a year. So why would they push for policies that hurt their pocketbook? Because they're scared of what the Tea part and the Tea Party mouthpiece that is Fox News tell them to be scared of.
The politics of killing the tax breaks for the wealthy while maintaining the middle-class breaks is a risky one. It shouldn't be, but given the climate in the country right now where the right wing can make up their own facts while ignoring the real ones (about the impact of the deficit, for example) this threatens to be the key issue of the midterm elections.
And while the Democrats are finally starting to try to tie the GOP in to the more extreme beliefs of the Tea Party candidates they support, they're not doing enough. This is bareknuckle politics and the Democrats have to become far more aggressive in not letting the GOP/Tea Party/Fox News dominate the conversation with half-truths.

Newt Gingrich wants to go to war with Iran and North Korea
Newt Gingrich - contender for the Republican nomination for President in 2012, cozy buddy with Sarah Palin and sure to be high in her cabinet if she were to win the Presidency - wants to start 2 more wars based on the failed ideology of Geroge W. Bush's "Axis of Evil" comments.

Shirley Sherrod, the NAACP, Fox News and the media's buying of right-wing lies
The USDA/Andrew Breitbart/Fox News race-baiting story has so many angles.
The basics: Shirley Sherrod, a USDA employee, told a story at an NAACP gathering in March about an incident 24 years ago in a previous job where she had to help a white farmer stave off foreclosure. She describes how the incident helped to to overcome her own biases and help the white family to save their farm. Conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart posted an edited version of the speech that made it seem as Ms. Sherrod was a racist who wouldn't help whites.
You should be familiar with Breitbart, the guy who hired two people to pose as a pimp and a prostitute to frame community organization ACORN. As a result of Breitbart's actions, Congress defunded ACORN and forced it out of business. It was later revealed (though scantly reported, especially by the New York Times - presumably out of embarrassment) that the videos were a heavily-edited scam seeking to make ACORN look bad.
After Breitbart posted the video, Fox News predictably jumped on it. Fox has been pushing a racial agenda in the last few weeks, between the fear-mongering over the New Black Panther Party and the NAACP's resolution condemning racism in some elements of the Tea Party.
Following the Fox News leap, someone in government - and who that "someone" is is in doubt - almost immediately forced Ms. Sherrod to resign.
This issue hopefully brings to a head several disturbing trends in American politics. Let's examine:
1) The rise of 'gotcha' politics based on edited materials or outright set-ups. The most obvious of these is the Breitbart ACORN hoax where a motivated political blogger was able to set up and bring down an organization not for criminal activity, but simply because he disagreed with their agenda.
Breitbart posted this heavily-edited video in response to the NAACP finally going after the racist elements in the Tea Party movement. He's part of a disturbing trend to try to paint blacks as oppressors holding white America down. In a real way, the Tea Party and Fox News are mainstreaming the agenda of the white supremacists.
2) The media's insistance on playing every issue as if there are two legitimate sides. Make no mistake, these movements have always existed. It's the national exposure that is different. The rise of the Internet and Internet-based media has given these people exposure. Couple that with the media's insistence on treating every issue as having two equal sides, like SportsCenter for politics, has given these hate-filled people a platform.
There are not always two equal sides. There certainly are not here. There is the truth and there is a lie and there is a woman whose life has been thrown into chaos because Breitbart lied and the media didn't do their job.
3) The media abdicating their traditional role as a watchdog. In many ways, this is the most troubling. Breitbart is a known and proven liar and Fox News is an obvious Republican shill. Yet the rest of the mainstream media runs with his claims with no checks, no investigation, no vetting. In pursuit of being the first, they neglect their basic duties. When investigative journalism is no longer the role of the mainstream media and in a world where Rolling Stone is now breaking major stories (and doing excellent analysis - this means you, Matt Taibbi), there is an obvious problem.
Murrow is spinning like a dynamo right now.
4) The media's lack of acceptance of their role once the lie is uncovered (by someone else) and their insistance on playing every issue as if there are two legitimate sides. Watching MSNBC's Tamryn Hall in the 11 o'clock hour today, she embarrassed herself. Even at this late hour, when the scope of the lie and the duping of the media is exposed, she still pretends that there are two sides. In introducing an "interview" with Breitbart, she mentions the ACORN tapes but fails to mention that Breitbart has been proven a liar and that the ACORN tapes are a hoax.
Even when pressed on the media's role, she constantly shifts blame to the administration. While the administration - if it did get involved (which is not proven yet) - is wrong, the administration was pushed by the huge media coverage of what turned out to be a non-issue. the media sreadfastly refuses to accept their roles as investigator and gate-keeper. They'll rightly take praise when they get it right, but they will not accept blame when their Pavlovian reactions are at the center of the problem.
Of course, in order for the situation to improve, the media as a whole will have to take a look at itself and it's practices, accept blame and responsibility for their failings and, most importantly, make the hard steps necessary to change. This includes risking the wrath of Fox News and the hard right.
Which means the situation isn't going to improve.

Quoting LGF: "It should be pointed out (again) that the “Ground Zero mosque” these idiots are ranting about is actually a proposed community center with an auditorium, swimming pool, and restaurants, in addition to a mosque. It would be housed in an existing 13-story building that’s two blocks away from Ground Zero and has no view of the area; there are two very big buildings in between the proposed community center and Ground Zero."

The GOP likes to claim that the private sector is the only thing that can save the economy. While I don't disagree that a strong private sector is vital, if the theory were true, we'd be in better shape right now. the private sector has been growing for 6 straight quarters now.
Speaking of exploding memes, let's debunk the "Obama is against corporate America" myth. Look at the rise in corporate profits since the first quarter of 2009. That doesn't look like the gateway to a socialist worker's paradise.
