Ezra Klein: 2010 Mid-terms

Ezra Klein doesn't think it's 1994 all over again.
Politics is generally viewed as a zero-sum game: When one party gains, the other loses. But Republicans have pursued a strategy turning politics into a negative-sum game: Both parties lose. They have effectively harmed the Democrats' agenda but done so at great cost to their own favorability numbers.

Andrew Sullivan's sobering thoughts on Afghanistan

Andrew Sullivan is a conservative writer for Atlantic Monthly. His Daily Dish is on Option C for Afghanistan
But I worry that his analysis - "all in or all out" - is not quite right. I've relied on this formula myself in the past, but every time I follow through in my head the full consequences of either path, I end up feeling deeply uncomfortable. I'll be candid and note, as readers will surely have twigged by now, that my Tory pessimism is resurgent. This is not just Afghanistan; it's Afghanistan after thirty years of violence, mayhem, brutality and anarchy. To believe that America can create a functioning stable state in that context seems insane to me, and given this country's fiscal crisis, a reckless commitment for the distant future. At the same time, letting Afghanistan unravel still further right now, with the ramifications for Pakistan's knife-edge struggle with Islamism, is a risk few American presidents would willingly take.
...
What's vital is that we make this decision based on the facts on the ground and as hard-nosed an assessment of reality as we can muster - not as a means to further or inflame our ideological and political battles of the past eight years. At this point in time, I think (Marc) Lynch's case for kicking the can down the road for a little while longer, while we absorb as many data points as we can about the events in the region and beyond, is pretty damn persuasive.

It isn't weakness; and it isn't surrender. It's just being responsible. Too much is at stake to be anything else right now. And, to be honest, I have every confidence in this cabinet and this general and this president will do the best they absolutely can. And while we shouldn't stint in criticism, we should allow them some lee-way in an immensely difficult and fateful call.

The I Hate America Group: Beck, Rush, Drudge, GOP

President Obama flew to Copenhagen to stump for a Chicago Olympics in 2016, a move that would have created 350,000 jobs and pumped billions into the economy. The plan was not to be, as Rio Je Janiero got the '16 games. But the more curious effect was the rejoicing from certain corners about America's failure.

This rejoicing didn't come from Iran, or North Korea. It didn't come from Europe. It came from Americans who normally parade their patriotism for all to see. These Americans are rejoicing in America's failure to boost our economy and our prestige in the world.

The word that would often be throw around for these Americans is "traitor".

So who are these traitors?

Media Matters presents the Two Minute Hate:

Glenn Beck on the "sweet" news that Chicago lost the Olympics:

Rush Limbaugh called it "the worst day of his presidency," adding that Obama "has failed" and the entire episode was an illustration of Obama's "Mars-sized ego."

He continued: "For those of you on the other side of the aisle listening in who are upset that I sound gleeful, I am. I don't deny it. I'm happy. Anything that gets in the way of Barack Obama accomplishing his domestic agenda is fine with me."

He then echoed Drudge's comment: "The ego has landed"

Upon being informed of the news, a gathering of conservatives at the Americans For Prosperity -- one of the main organizing groups behind the tea party protests -- erupted in applause. They cheered once more after they were told that Chicago had been eliminated during the first round of voting. The moment was captured on video (below) and reported by Hotline On Call:
These traitors run against the wishes of a super-majority of Americans: A poll conducted by Zogby International from Sept. 22 to 25 showed that 84 percent of Americans support having the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Chicago.

Why do they hate America?

Alan "Die Quickly" Grayson: GOP "knuckle-dragging neanderthals" on health care

Alan Grayson is the Democratic member of the House who suggested the Republican health care plan was 1) don't get sick and 2) if you do, die quickly. Then when asked to apologize, he did - to the 44,000 who will die this year because they don't have health care.

Here he is defending his comments and calling Republicans "knuckle-dragging neanderthals".

Joy Behar and Ann Coulter square off over Sarah Palin

Joy Behar and Ann Coulter go back and forth over Sarah Palin's qualifications, or lack thereof, oh Behar's new HN show. Entertaining and annoying all at the same time.

The subject of Palin came up during a discussion about death panels, which Coulter acknowledges began from "one little Twitter from Sarah Palin," concluding that this makes Palin "a powerful woman."

Behar responded: "Ann, I like you, but the woman is not coherent. She can't construct a sentence."

Sarah Palin book excerpt

Uncovered and published without permission by Elvis Dingeldein.

The following is an excerpt from Sarah Palin's forthcoming Magnum Opus* Going Rogue, leaked to me by one of the few friends in publishing I have left that has not been shitcanned due to American Bibliophobia. More to follow, as it comes in.
EXCERPTED FROM CHAPTER FOURTEEN – WHO’S THAT A’KNOCKIN’?

It was clear to me from the start that Jesus wanted me for the position of that Vice President position, the Vice Presidency, as they say, also. So when I got that call from Old Johnny asking me should I like that Position Flexible – that the Founders, they are so wise and constitutionally, were so wise assigning duties, as the Founders – I heard Jesus whisper in my ear, “This is you’re calling, Sarah Palin! Position Flexible, Sarah! Go!” So that was darn sweet of Him, I thought. Also.

And I accepted right away, on the spot, except for the time I gathered all my girls together but not my son God only knows where he was, also, and made them vote whether mommy should listen to Jesus for the nominating and they said “Let's do this, mom!” except of course also they didn’t know until the day we all flew to Ohio. Or maybe it was Michigan. So they voted, of course, because I needed my girls to tell me it was okay this Vice Presidency nominatings, also, but I can’t remember them actually knowing about it until after I accepted, so the voting may have been about if we should have had the KFC or the Taco Bell to celebrate that night, also. I think we had Taco Bell.
* Sarah Palin has no idea what this means, but assumes it to be an insult or slander of some kind and will be posting a stern denial via Teh Facebooks as soon as she's finished taking the Should Obama Be Killed Poll.

Conan falls during taping, is hospitalized: "His pumpkin really got pounded"

Conan O'Brien has turned his "Tonight Show" stunt injury into comedy, showing footage of it as a "cautionary tale" for kids.

"As many of you may know, on this past Friday's show I was doing a stunt and I hit my head and suffered a slight concussion. And I promise, if you're a good audience, I'll do it again tonight," O'Brien said during Monday's taping.

In a transcript released by NBC, he joked that he struck his head so hard "that for five seconds I actually understood the plot of 'Lost.'"

O'Brien and guest Teri Hatcher were in a footrace when he tumbled, forcing Friday's show to be halted. He was taken to a hospital for examination, and a "Tonight" rerun aired instead of the planned episode.

In his monologue Monday, O'Brien joked that he got so much media attention from the accident that he's planning a sequel with one of Hatcher's "Desperate Housewives" co-stars.

"So tune in tomorrow when Eva Longoria pushes me down an elevator shaft," O'Brien quipped.

Before showing clips from Friday, O'Brien suggested parents "wake up your children because this is a cautionary tale."

The race between him and Hatcher was to end at the studio with the two rushing down stairs to the finish line. His memory was fuzzy, O'Brien said Monday, but he thinks he was trying to slide on a slick floor when he lost his footing.

"Why don't we show people what happened. Set your VCR to record, and your friends can all laugh watching this later," he said before the tape rolled. "'His pumpkin really got pounded' -- that's my father talking."

Did someone say "indoctrination"?

Someone call Michelle Malkin. The proprietors of Jesus Camp are teaching children to worship the president. Literally.

Is this what the GOP is counting on?

Is the GOP banking on sheer numbers of crazy-as-hell voters a) existing and b) coming out to vote instead of eating Ho-Hos and playing XBox to come out to vote to return them to power?

And does the GOP think that these wingnuts can convince their neighbors with off-the-charts nutsiness like this?

Srsly?

Warning: NSFW (Not Safe For Work)

Then there's the President's speech to the Congressional Black Caucus, where he told this story:
"I was up at the G20 -- just a little aside -- I was up at the G20, and some of you saw those big flags and all the world leaders come in and Michelle and I are shaking hands with them," the president said. "One of the leaders -- I won't mention who it was -- he comes up to me. We take the picture, we go behind.
"He says, 'Barack, explain to me this health care debate.'

"He says, 'We don't understand it. You're trying to make sure everybody has health care and they're putting a Hitler mustache on you -- I don't -- that doesn't make sense to me. Explain that to me.'"
As Cesca wrote:
"It doesn't make sense to anyone with a rational mind. The best answer is that the wingnuts love to make loud noises. It's all they've got, and it's no wonder since their leaders are an impotent race-baiter and a googly-eyed paranoiac. How else can a biracial, liberal son of an African immigrant be labeled a "Nazi?"

Eagles / Chiefs liveblog Second half

THIRD QUARTER

13:20 - KC ball, 3rd and 20 and they go with an off tackle run. Todd Haley has no confidence in this offense right now.

12:20 - D-Jax for 17. Kolb hangs in a collapsing pocket.

11:45 - Offense running well so they bring in Vick to slow things down. Around the end for 5. Yawn.

11:25 - Kolb to Maclin tickling the sideline for 9 yards and a first down. Lots of zip on the ball.

11:00 - Kolb to Maclin for 10. Surgical.

4:56 - Larry Johnson FUNBLE, recovered by Quentin Mikell.

New terminology alert: Funble, a fumble recovered by your team. Self-explanatory.

KC challenge. Did Gocong strip before Johnson hit ground?

Call stands. Eagles ball, 1st and 10 on own 47.

FOURTH QUARTER

9:36 - Mush. Back and forth. Most significant moment of the last 6 minutes was Omar Gaither walking by the open mic on the ref calling an illegal block in the back on KC and saying "good call ref".

Eagles ball at their own 28.

8:45 - Kolb laser to Celek for 15.
Celek 7-69 0TD

BTW - I'm running 7-2 on my early game picks. Det, GB, SF, NE, Phi, NYG, Bal. Losing on Ten and Hou.

1:01 - Garcia takes a knee. One more to go into the bye 2-1.

FINAL SCORE: Eagles 34 Chiefs 14

Upcoming schedule: BYE, TB, @Oak, @Was. We can easily be 5-1 going into the heart of the schedule, back-to-back home games vs the Giants and Cowboys.

Final thoughts:
Kevin Kolb was very solid and, more impressively, poised under pressure.

Brent Celek is the real deal.

Defensive tackling was better, but there's much room for improvement. KC isn't the test.

The wildcat has to go. It contributed nothing. Kolb didn't need the help.

Ditch Vick. Not because of his old problems, but because using him slows down the offense and not using him will eventually be a distraction.

Eagles / Chiefs liveblog

Eagles getting lucky with Chiefs bad penalties and missed opportunities.

8:34 - Ellis Hobbs beaten in great coverage at back pylon. 14-7 Eagles. It's a game. Kolb needs to respond. Defense backing off, acting like they're up 30 in the 4th Q.

No Vick since 2nd possession. That's a good thing.

8:26 - Ellis Hobbs with nice return from endzone to 25. Penalty, but not on us. Eagles ball on their own 36.

3:00 - Vick wildcat to Maclin. Momentun killer.

2:37 - Kolb to Celek who pulls defender for 4 HARD yards. Why keep putting Vick in? Kolb is solid.

2:00 warning. ARRRRGH! Direct snap to McCoy. Nothing! WHY is Andy trying to kill the momentum?

1:05 - Avant for 4 to the 11.

0:34 - Kolb hits Avant in the hands, Avant drops. Akers in for FG from 29. 24-7 Ealges

0:09 - Cole, Howard, Clemons sack. Chiefs punt.

HALFTIME NOTES: 24-7 Eagles
Washington is losing to Detroit. hehhehheh
