Chicago Tribune endorses Obama

According to Editor & Publisher, Obama now has a 3 to 1 lead over McCain in newspaper endorsements -- 51 newspapers with a total 6,299,363 daily circulation. At least seven of those papers endorsed President Bush in 2004.

The Chicago Tribune, a newspaper that has not endorsed a Democrat for president since it was founded in 1847, followed suit. From their editorial:

"Many Americans say they're uneasy about Obama. He's pretty new to them.

We can provide some assurance. We have known Obama since he entered politics a dozen years ago. We have watched him, worked with him, argued with him as he rose from an effective state senator to an inspiring U.S. senator to the Democratic Party's nominee for president.

We have tremendous confidence in his intellectual rigor, his moral compass and his ability to make sound, thoughtful, careful decisions. He is ready.
...
It may have seemed audacious for Obama to start his campaign in Springfield, invoking Lincoln. We think, given the opportunity to hold this nation's most powerful office, he will prove it wasn't so audacious after all. We are proud to add Barack Obama's name to Lincoln's in the list of people the Tribune has endorsed for president of the United States."

Exhuming McCarthy

She's sharpening stones....

(from Hardball)

(HuffPost)
In a television appearance that outraged Democrats are already describing as Joseph McCarthy politics, Minnesota Rep. Michelle Bachmann claimed on Friday that Barack Obama and his wife Michelle held anti-American views and couldn't be trusted in the White House. She even called for the major newspapers of the country to investigate other members of Congress to "find out if they are pro-America or anti-America."

Appearing on MSNBC's Hardball, Bachmann went well off the reservation when it comes to leveling political charges against the Democratic nominee.

"If we look at the collection of friends that Barack Obama has had in his life," she said, "it calls into question what Barack Obama's true beliefs and values and thoughts are. His attitudes, values, and beliefs with Jeremiah Wright on his view of the United States...is negative; Bill Ayers, his negative view of the United States. We have seen one friend after another call into question his judgment -- but also, what it is that Barack Obama really believes?"

Goaded by a Chris Matthews to explain exactly what she was talking about (at one point Bachmann seemed to imply that liberalism was anti-Americanism), the congresswoman waded deeper into the mud.

"Remember it was Michele Obama who said she is only recently proud of her country and so these are very anti-American views," she said. "That's not the way that most Americans feel about our country. Most Americans are wild about America and they are very concerned to have a president who doesn't share those values."

Matthews later pressed her to name a single member of Congress other than Obama who she thought was anti-American. Bachmann, who initially wouldn't budge, called for a major "expose" into the matter.

"What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out if they are pro-America or anti-America," she said.

Join the petition to censure Michele Bachmann
I watched Congresswoman Bachmann's comments live and I was disgusted at her resurrection of Joe McCarthy's ghost. We DO NOT need "anti-American" witch hunts in the Congress. What we need is congressmen and women who understand that the true ideals of America come in differing opinions and the discussion of those opinions. Further, differing opinions do not equate to being unAmerican. Congresswoman Bachmann needs to be disabused of her dangerous notions of what is American and needs to stop poisoning the waters against the ever more likely chances of an Obama Administration.

Obama Under Fire For Playing T-Ball During Vietnam

WASHINGTON—At a press conference on Monday, members of the Vietnam Veterans Alliance blasted Democratic nominee Barack Obama for his failure to serve in the Southeast Asian war that ended 33 years ago, alleging that during the conflict the candidate frequently engaged in games of T-ball. "While our boys were dying in Vietnam, Barack Obama was running around a little league field, laughing and having fun without a care in the world," VVA spokesman James Lowry said. "John McCain left his wife and three children behind and fought bravely, but I guess Sen. Obama decided that practicing cursive and learning how to ride a bike was just more important than defending his country in her hour of need. I bet he wasn't even able to point out Vietnam on a map." Lowry later speculated that if Obama had been sent over to fight in the conflict, he probably would have peed his pants and cried for his mommy as soon as he touched down in Saigon. (The Onion)

Yeah, this is real

But McCain isn't Bush. Right. Right?

"I'm not George Bush. Huh? What's A Doppleganger?"

Prediction for tonight

McCain will come out tonight and resort to his last strategy: reminding people Obama is black

Radical friends; since when are they a bad thing? Part 1

Thomas Paine has a claim to the title The Father of the American Revolution because of Common Sense, the pro-independence monograph pamphlet he anonymously published on January 10, 1776; it quickly spread among the literate, and, in three months, 120,000 copies sold throughout the American British colonies (with only two million free inhabitants), making it a best-selling work in eighteenth-century America.

He was attacked as being a radical, calling for independence, and violent revolution if necessary, from his own country.

Loyalists vigorously attacked Common Sense. One attack, titled Plain Truth (1776), by Marylander James Chalmers, said Paine was a political quack and warned that without monarchy, the government would "degenerate into democracy". John Adams disagreed with the type of radical democracy promoted by Paine, and published Thoughts on Government in 1776 to advocate a more conservative approach to republicanism.

Palin rally in Scranton: "Kill him"

I am humiliated. This is my town.

Scranton Times
"Chris Hackett (Republican candidate in the 10th Congressional District) addressed the increasingly feisty crowd as they await the arrival of Gov. Palin.

Each time the Republican candidate for the seat in the 10th Congressional District mentioned Barack Obama the crowd booed loudly.

One man screamed "kill him!""

New Polls.... get yer New Polls here

Yeah, it can change, but this seems to be early news of a bloodbath

Obama ahead by six in Florida - outside the margin of error.
Obama by one in North Carolina.
Obama up four points in Virginia.
Obama up four in Ohio.
Obama is only a point down in West Virginia.
Obama is only a point behind in Missouri.
North Dakota and Indiana are now toss-ups.

New York Times via CBS

The Obama-Biden ticket now leads the McCain-Palin ticket 53 percent to 39 percent among likely voters, a 14-point margin. One week ago, prior to the Town Hall debate that uncommitted voters saw as a win for Obama, that margin was just three points.

Among independents who are likely voters - a group that has swung back and forth between McCain and Obama over the course of the campaign - the Democratic ticket now leads by 18 points. McCain led among independents last week.

Quote of the Year

According to his post-game quotes, Matt Stairs must be into some freaky celebratory shit. Following the 2-run blast that put the Fightins' up 3-1, he had this to say:

“When you get that nice celebration coming into the dugout and you’re getting your ass hammered by guys — there’s no better feeling than to have that done.”

Hey, I’m not here to judge, Matt. Do whatcha gotta.

Breaking News: Obama not black

David Alan Grier, host of Comedy Central's new "Chocolate News," questions whether Barack Obama would really be the "first black president." After all, "he barely passes the brown paper bag test."

Shady associations

So why are old white guys allowed to pal around with whoever they want, but the black guy who meets someone 25 years after his crime and disassociates himself from that crime gets tarred? Pun intended.

Not only does McCain pal around with convicted Watergate burglar G. Gordon Liddy, but he COMMENDS him on his principles and tells Liddy he's proud of him! Cripes!

Here's an excerpt from Liddy's radio show in May of THIS YEAR:
LIDDY: Your experience in the Hanoi Hilton is remarkable. I mean, I put in five years in a prison [for masterminding the Watergate burglary, and associated crimes], but it was here in the United States, and they didn't torture - the only torture that I had was being forced to listen to rap music from time to time.

McCAIN: Well, you know, I'm proud of you. I'm proud of your family. I'm proud to know your son, Tom, who's a great and wonderful guy. And it's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon. And congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.

Rundown

Here's a list of the lies, untruths, misstatements and outright hate unleashed by McCain-Palin this weekend:

McCain chairman Rick Davis plays the POW card to insulate McCain against the hate being spewed at his rallies. (Huff Post)

(VA state GOP Chairman Jeffrey M. Frederick) climbed atop a folding chair to give 30 campaign volunteers who were about to go canvassing door to door their talking points — for instance, the connection between Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden: "Both have friends that bombed the Pentagon," he said. (Time)

As the crowd cheered at a Sarah Palin rally this morning in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, a man in the audience grinned as he held up a stuffed monkey doll with a Barack Obama bumper sticker wrapped across its forehead. (Huff Post)
Here's a video of this hateful old jerk. Hope his name gets out.
PA back to at least minus 1.

Sarah Palin lies and clears herself in Troopergate: "Well, I’m very very pleased to be cleared of any legal wrongdoing," Palin said, "any hint of any kind of unethical activity there. Very pleased to be cleared of any of that." (ABC News)
Of course, this is a complete lie. (CNN)

Rev. Arnold Conrad, at McCain rally in Davenport Iowa invoking his big god:

“I would also pray, Lord, that your reputation is involved in all that happens between now and November, because there are millions of people around this world praying to their god - whether it’s Hindu, Buddha, Allah - that his opponent wins, for a variety of reasons,” Conrad said.

“And Lord, I pray that you would guard your own reputation, because they’re going to think that their god is bigger than you, if that happens. So I pray that you will step forward and honor your own name with all that happens between now and Election Day.”
