Family Research Council tacitly advocates bullying gays under guise of religion

The Washington Post should be embarrassed to print this editorial by Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council. In it, he displays the hypocrisy inherent in his Christian position of 'love the sinner, hate the sin', the reason that Christians like him are causing homosexuals such mental and social problems, as well the untenability of his position.

He begins:

The media has recently been filled with reports of several recent suicides by teenagers who are reported to have been victims of "anti-gay" bullying. Some homosexual activist groups lay blame at the feet of conservative Christians who teach that homosexual conduct is wrong, as well as pro-family groups such as Family Research Council which oppose elements of the homosexual political agenda, such as same-sex "marriage."

The Christians and pro-family leaders I know are unanimous in believing that no person, especially a child, should be subjected to verbal or physical harassment or violence--whether because of their sexuality, their religious beliefs, or for any other reason. Such bullying violates the Christian's obligation to love our neighbor as we love ourselves, and receives no support from the pro-family political movement.

Yay! Excellent! On this we agree, bullying is wrong. However, he then lays out the groundwork, if not the claim, that it's not only okay, but it's incumbent on Christians to create a climate where bullying can fluorish.

However, homosexual activist groups like GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) are exploiting these tragedies to push their agenda of demanding not only tolerance of homosexual individuals, but active affirmation of homosexual conduct and their efforts to redefine the family.

So according to Perkins, although bullying should not be tolerated, it's necessary to oppose a climate where homosexuals are accepted and can live their lives out of the shadows. After all, we don't want to affirm that being gay is acceptable. We have to make sure that people know that being gay is wrong in the eyes of the Lord and that Christians have a duty to make sure that gays don't make social strides towards acceptance and equal rights. Just don't hit them.

So to sum things up to this point, bulling gays is bad, but so is accepting them. They shouldn't be physically harmed, but under no circumstances should they feel they're normal.

There is an abundance of evidence that homosexuals experience higher rates of mental health problems in general, including depression. However, there is no empirical evidence to link this with society's general disapproval of homosexual conduct. In fact, evidence from the Netherlands would seem to suggest the opposite, because even in that most "gay-friendly" country on earth, research has shown homosexuals to have much higher mental health problems.

Ahhhh! Homosexuals are mentally defective. Yes, of course. So they should know that they're abnormal in both conduct and mental make-up. In fact, everyone should know this. So it's OK to advertise that gays are aberrant, even though we know that society tends to terrorize it's outcastes.

Some homosexuals may recognize intuitively that their same-sex attractions are abnormal--yet they have been told by the homosexual movement, and their allies in the media and the educational establishment, that they are "born gay" and can never change. This--and not society's disapproval--may create a sense of despair that can lead to suicide.

Again, the use of the word abnormal. Even though we know that homosexuality is part of the animal kingdom, right-wingers want to paint this as "abnormal". But it's not the condemnation that Perkins wants heaped on gays that leads to their suicide, it's the knowledge that they're defective - even though it's people like him heaping these thoughts of abnormality on them.

'It's not our fault that we tell them what they do is an abomination. Our scorn doesn't lead to their problems, it's their internalization of their abomination that leads to problems.

How do we fix this, Tony? How?

The most important thing that Christians can offer to homosexuals is hope--hope that their sins, just like the sins of anyone else, can be forgiven and their lives transformed by the power of Jesus Christ.

OHHHHH! The invisible ghost in the sky can fix all of their problems. If they just embrace our fairy tale, things will get better, they'll stop being abominations and we canall live in the clouds with Invisible Man.

Perkins belives in fairy tales and yet it's homosexuals who are delusional?

Doesn't Perkins realize that - while he calls for an anti-bullying stance - taking the position that gays are "abnormal" and "suffering from mental health problems" in being gay IS BULLYING. Bullying isn't just what happened to Matthew Sheppard, bullying is living in a climate where you're told that you're less than fully human. You're told that you made a choice to be an abomination, but that by accepting a farcical notion of the spirit in the sky, you can be made whole.

The climate that Christians are trying to create IS bullying.

the Post should be embarassed to print this on National Coming Out Day - the one day that homosexuals should feel some measure of support. And the Post publishes this guest editorial from a bigot.

Deranged, probably closeted, socially awkward Michigan AG stalks college student on-line

For months, Andrew Shirvell, an assistant attorney general for Michigan, has been writing the blog "Chris Armstrong Watch," devoted to attacking the University of Michigan's gay student assembly president with homophobic and other horrible slurs. What is wrong with him?

Shirvell, who faced an outraged Anderson Cooper on CNN last night, is a deeply conservative Christian who claims that he has the right to say whatever he wants outside of work. Which may be true, but his campaign against a gay college student might have veered into the category of harassment, and at the very least, is as sad and pathetic as pretty much anything an adult can do under the name of "political activism."

Stewart On Blocked DADT Repeal: 'Are We Run By Assholes?'

Last night on "The Daily Show," Jon Stewart lamented the repeal of "Don't Ask Don't Tell" failing to move forward in the senate, leading him to ask if the United States really is "run by a**holes."

Just like the 9/11 first responders' health care bill that was "snatched from the jaws of victory" by the Senate, another seemingly popular bill can't become a law. The problem lies with both Republicans and Democrats acting like a**holes, as Stewart so artfully put it, beginning with Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich) attaching the repeal of DADT to a military arms bill, forcing those who normally wouldn't vote to repeal to do so or risk looking soft on defense.

This terrible strategy begins a snowball effect of a**hole behavior, when GOP leader Mitch McConnell asks for 20 amendments to the bill, of which Senate majority leader Harry Reid says they could have one and also tied a "Dream Act" to the bill regarding illegal immigration, that conservatives would presumably not vote for.

After this tit for tat battle, Senator John McCain filibusters, and Stewart does all he can to keep from making innuendos when he suggests the Senate not try to "push this through." Still, Stewart had to state the obvious:

"Are we run by a**holes? Indeed."

Sorry about the 3 week absence. It's been a hell of a 3 weeks. Here's a recap:

The Republicans took Teddy Kennedy's seat with a former nude model who pledged to vote against the same health care bill that he supported when it passed in Massachusetts. Republicans rejoiced. Scott Brown then said he supported abortion rights. They've been kinda quiet about the whole thing ever since.

Obama was said to have lost his mojo. 8 days later, he found it again when he went after Republicans in the State of the Union address. And then he accepted an invitation to appear before the GOP House caucus - on camera - and went up and down the court on them for 90 minutes. This caused Fox to break away for the sake of the narrative.

The Supreme Court turned our political campaigns over to corporate America, paving the way for "Palin 2012, brought to you by Monstanto".

The Republicans are using the filibuster, of the threat thereof, as a blunt weapon.



Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) is holding as many as 70 of Obama's appointments hostage until he gets his pork projects (earmarks) passed in the Senate. To break his hold, the Senate needs - you guessed it - 60 votes. It's time to bring on the nuclear option and change the filibuster to a more reasonable procedure - one that doesn't cripple the business of the nation.

As Steve Pearlstein opines:

After all, if the only things the party in power can accomplish are those that the minority power can agree with, then what is the point of having an election? No matter which side won a majority, "common ground" -- the things they all agree on -- would still be the same.

And it appears that "Don't ask, don't tell" is going away, paving the way for gays to openly serve their country. For years, the GOP said they'd leave it up to the military high command. I guess they figured that generals and stuff would never let fags serve. Well, last week they did. Adm. Mike Mullen told Congress that gays should be allowed to serve openly in uniform, arguing that it is "the right thing to do." And many, many Republicans lost their shit. John McCain backtracked on his comments of 3 years ago and Ollie North told Sean Hannity that if we let gays serve, the next steps was NAMBLA members. That's the North American Man-Boy Love Association, the group that advocates legal sodomy with minors.

Brewing storm over gay military dismissals, Obama refuses to intervene

A storm is brewing over President Obama's refusal to intercede on the behalf of Dan Choi, an Arabic translator and lieutenant in the U.S. Army who was just dismissed for being gay. Choi went on the "Rachel Maddow Show" last week and said he intends "to fight it tooth and nail," and that this kind of behavior "weakens the military." 54 Arabic translators (and hundreds more servicemen) have been dismissed from the Army due to their sexuality.

Jon Stewart excoriated President Bush for his policies and President Obama for flip-flopping on the issue, saying:

"So it was okay to waterboard a guy 80 times but God forbid the guy who could understand what that prick was saying has a boyfriend? Waterboarding may make a prisoner talk, but it ain't gonna make him talk English."

He then introduced the following segment on the issue, in which John Oliver supported the Army's choice with the "he's gay" defense. He eventually screamed at Stewart saying, "I will not let you Cramer me."
